I have a Nissan Xterra SE Tire/Rim size 265/65R17 110T M+S and a Nissan Frontier SE Tire/Rim size P265/70R16 111T M+S, both have 6 lugs, can I put the tires/rims from the Frontier on the Xterra going from 17's to 16's?

Dennis asked on 08/09/2009.

Hello Dennis,

Sorry it has taken so long to respond to your question. I would recommend visiting www.tirerack.com to help you determine the proper tire clearance for your truck. We use this site a lot for help, but installing the actual tire and rim is the only way to be sure.

Thank you.

I have a 1955 ford f100 with 16 inch rims and bias tires. I want to install radial tires on these stock 16 inch 1955 rims. Can it be done? should I use radial tubes on the rims.

dana asked on 07/21/2009.

In order to fully address your tire concern we would need to be provided with the exact size information of the tires currently installed on the truck. In order to properly change from the bias ply tires to a radial tire will require cross referencing the size information between the two types of tires. Thank you for your request.

I have a 94 Chevrolet z71 I have put 08 silverado 20

mike asked on 07/07/2009.

Mike,

I apologize for taking so long to answer your question. The largest tire that is recommended for a 20" wheel on your vehicle would be 305/45-20. Keep in mind, the optional sizes listed above are found to fit most vehicles when using proper wheels. General vehicle condition, vehicle and wheel application can affect proper tire fitment. Optional sizes should be carefully tested on a vehicle and clearances with the body work and suspension should be checked prior to driving on a tire. Failure to do so can cause damage to the vehicle and/or sudden tire failure due to tire damage caused by contact with the vehicle.

The PRO answered on 07/30/2009.

I have been told 2 different things on tire. Some say to inflate a tire to what the tire says. Others say to inflate a tire to what is stamped on the door jamb. Which is correct? People don't always put the same size tire on when replacing them.

Ken asked on 07/03/2009.

Ken,

I apologize for taking so long to answer your question. The manufacturer recommends inflating your tires to the specification that is stamped inside of your vehicle's door jamb. These specifications are determined for vehicle weight, ride, roll over, safety, etc. for the vehcie. The tire itself, has a maximum inflation specification stamped on it, but not the specification that is recommended for your vehicle. 35psi in a large truck tire is same pressure as 35 psi in a small car tire. Thank you.

I have doing price comparison for tires for my '06 Chevy Aveo and I am having a diccidult finding my size in stock....the 185/55/15....one tire store said he had 185/60/15 and I could run that tire....Is that an acceptable size for my vehicle??

Reece asked on 06/24/2009.

Reece,

I apologize for taking so long to answer your question. Your vehicle would do just fine using the 185/60/15 in terms of scrubbing or interference. The only concern I would have would be disruption of accuracy to your speedometer. I would recommend having the speedometer checked after installation of these tires.

Jim,

I own a 2006 Magnum SRT8. Assuming I wanted to keep my stock 20

Eric asked on 06/23/2009.

Eric,

I apologize for taking so long to answer your question. Due to the performance tires (size) that your vehicle is equipped with, the manufacturer does NOT recommend substituting the OE tire size. Granted, I don't feel that going another size up (255/45ZR20) would cause a problem with scrubbing or interference. But doing so, probably wouldn't be a big change in the appearence you are looking for.

Mr. Burdeshaw,
I have a 2009 Mustang Bullitt. What is the widest size tire I can put on my Bullitt 18

Salvatore asked on 06/03/2009.

Sal,
Per the tire experts at The Tire Rack, the widest recommended tire for your 2009? Mustang Bullitt would be a
255/45ZR18 which can be installed on both the front and the rear of the car. Optional fitment, for the rear only, would be a 285/40ZR18. However, this would have a definite impact on the 60's concept of the car. The tire I would recommend for your vehicle would be a BF Goodrich G Force Supersport AS 99W in the 255/45ZR18 fitment. Price for installation would be $1,059.73 w/tax which would also include resetting the vehicle alignment. Fitment of the larger tires on the vehicle may also require resetting the tire information for the vehicle pcm in order to correct for speedometer error due to the rotational size difference compared to the original equipment tires. Resetting the vehicle pcm tire information would be an additional charge of $114.88 in order to download the information from the vehicle manufacturer website to the vehicle pcm. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance with your upgraded tire purchase. Thank you!

I HAVE A 1995 FIREBIRD WITH STOCK WHEELS. CAN I PUT 18 INCH RIMS ON THE CAR WITHOUT ANY MODIFICATIONS AND NO RUBBING THE WHEEL WELL? THANKS

KALEB asked on 04/11/2009.

Hello Kaleb,

The rim will probably fit with no problem. The tire size is where the scrubbing comes into play. You need to know the offset of the rim, the rolling diameter of the original tire and rim (measure from the top of the tire to the bottom), and the width of the tire and rim. The vehicle is designed to accept certain sizes of tires before adaptors and suspension kits are needed. Do a little research online with rim sites. Alot of these sites have rim formulas you can input your vehicle information and give you the results you are looking for (try tirerack.com). Good luck!

Hi -

is it true that you should slightly up the pressure of tires when traveling at higher speeds say on an interstate for a road trip?

also is it true that if your tires wear faster in the middle they are overinflated, and faster on the sides they are under inflated or is that all based on poor alignment?

Internet asked on 03/20/2009.

Hello,

Tire inflation should be adjusted to the recommended manufacturer specification posted inside of the driver's door. This adjustment should be made first thing in the morning, cold, before the vehicle is driven, so that the tire temperature is not hot. The specification from the manufacturer allows for any expansion or contraction of the rubber due to temperature differences. You are correct in saying that if your tires wear faster in the middle they are over inflated, and on the sides they are under inflated. Keep in mind that the alignment can definately cause shoulder wear on the tires, but usually it's the inner or outer shoulder of the tire. Hopefully I have answered your question. Feel free to write back if you have any further questions. Thanks!

what tire would best fit a 20 x 8.5

chris asked on 03/19/2009.

Best tire fitment application per the experts at Tire Rack.com would be 245/35r20. This size should properly fit the vehicle, however, a fitment test installation should be performed before installing all of the tires to ensure proper clearance on the vehicle and with the vehicle body.

I have a Honda Civc DX 1988 and it just quit on me its not the starter, alternator,or gas line. what do you think it could be?

Amber asked on 03/10/2009.

Hello Amber,
That really depends on what "just quit on me" means. If the vehicle shut off going down the road and now all it will do is spin and spin but not crank up and run, that would be one system on your car. If you turn the key and you don't hear the starter/engine making any kind of noise, or if you don't see any lights on the dash coming on, then that would be different system on your car. There are several areas that can cause both of these problems. The ignition switch, fuel pump, timing belt, ignition coil, or even a battery connection, just to name a few. What I would recommend is having an Engine Performance Diagnostics perfomed on your vehicle to prevent any unnecessary cost and guess work. Feel free to write back if you have any further questions or information. Thank you!

I wanted to know what is the biggest tire I can put on a Chevy 04 Aveo SS?

Alecia asked on 02/27/2009.

The Aveo offers an optional rim size of 15 inch which would accommodate a P185/55/15. Unfortunately, Chevrolet doesn't recommend a larger tire for the 14 inch rim. You could probably get away with installing a P195/60/14 without causing any scrubbing, but that is going to be the largest you should go. Keep in mind that if the manufacturer doesn't offer an optional tire size, installing a different size could also affect your speedometer reading. Hopefully this answered your question. Please write back if you need any further information. Sorry for the delay in response. Thank you!

Hi -

Inside my driver's door where the manufacturer makes recommendations for tire pressure it says to put about 10 more psi in the rear tires than the front. I am not lugging around 4 passengers, or that weight ever - isn't this going to cause my tires to wear out faster being they won't all have the same pressure, and why would they recommend this?

Should I go with their recommended pressure, or the pressure recommended on the aftermarket tire?

Ralph asked on 02/25/2009.

Hello,

It's a little tough not knowing the type of vehicle you are driving, so I'm going answer assuming you are driving some type of truck or suv. We would recommend inflating your tires to the manufacturer's specifications. These specs are calculated using the vechiles demensions, weight and suspension characteristics. Even though you aren't hauling a heavy load, handling and roll over factors are taken into consideration when these inflation specs are determined. As far as tire wear, 10psi is not enough to cause any abnormal wear. Just be sure to re-adjust the air pressure when it is time to rotate your tires. I hope I answered your question. Thank you!

I read your answer abour 185-55-15 tires for the Chevy Aveo. I have that size and would like to replace them with a higher profile tire than 55's. What is the largest tire I can use on my 07 Aveo 4-dr sedan? Is there any way to

joel asked on 02/24/2009.

Mr. Sprague,

Unfortunately, we specialize in original equipment specifications and I don't have that information available. I can tell you that your vehicle does offer optional tires sizes if you elect to change wheel size and alter suspension components. You may want to check with a custom body shop. I've heard a lot of good things about "Two Keys Custom Body Shop" in the Augusta area. Thank you.

Dear the pro, I read online that it is best to not add air to your tires in certain temperatures, or within 2 hours of driving your car. Can you give me instructions as to the best time, temperature, and procedure for adding air to your tires. Also, is it better to follow the manufacturers PSI recommendations from inside the door even if you have tires different from the factory rubber that calls for a different pressure?

thanks for your help.

Eric asked on 10/24/2008.

Tire pressure can be tricky. If your vehicle is equipped with the original tire size that is stamped on your door, that is the air pressure that I would go with. Keep in mind, tire pressure is going to fluctuate due to hot or cold temperatures.
